Project Details

UPDATE: The main replacement project is complete. Paving is scheduled to occur August 26 through August 29, 2024. Learn more.

Tualatin Valley Water District (TVWD) has finished replacing 1,600 feet of the 6-inch water main along NW Meadowgrass Drive, from NW 174th Avenue to NW Somerset Drive and on NW 171st Place and NW 172nd Place, with a new eight-inch ductile iron water main.

Water mains are underground pipes that carry treated drinking water from a water treatment plant to a customer’s home or business.

The project has improved the water system in this area by:

  • Addressing aging infrastructure.
  • Upgrading infrastructure with a history of leaks.
  • Increasing water and fire flow capacity to the area.

The project is a $500,000 investment in this area of the water system and funded through regular water bill payments.

A map of the project area is below.

Timeline

  • Construction: Late-May to August 2, 2024

Process

Replacing the water main included:

  • Cutting into the road surface.
  • Digging a trench.
  • Installing a section of the new water main in the trench.
  • Backfilling the section of trench and temporarily restoring the road surface.
  • Testing the new section of the water main for pressure and water quality.
  • Repeating steps two through five for additional water main sections.
  • Connecting customers’ water service lines to the new water main after all sections are installed.
  • Disconnecting the old water main from the system.

Final road restoration (paving) will occur in summer/fall 2024.

Impacts

Before Construction Begins

  • Preparation Work: One to two weeks before construction begins, TVWD will be onsite to conduct preparatory work, including potholing (or digging small holes to locate existing utilities) and surveying.

During Construction

  • Workdays and Hours: Work will typically occur Monday through Friday from 7 am to 5 pm.
  • Staging: Equipment, tools, and materials may be stored on nearby streets during the project, including overnight.
  • Large Equipment: Front loaders, excavators, and dump trucks will be used during this project.
  • Noise, Dust, and Vibrations: Properties near the project site will experience noise, dust, and vibration.
  • Traffic Impacts: Portions of the road where the construction is taking place may need to be closed temporarily to allow crews to work safely and efficiently. Detours may be set up to redirect traffic around the construction zone. Lane closures or detours can lead to increased traffic congestion, especially during peak travel times. There might be temporary interruptions to driveway access or pedestrian pathways near the construction area.
  • Planned Water Service Interruptions: Your water service may intermittently be shut off for several hours to complete portions of the project. Customers will be notified with a front door notice at least 24 hours in advance of any planned water service shut off.
  • Services: Mail, garbage, and delivery services will continue to have access to provide their services.
  • Drone Surveys: During the project, TVWD may fly a drone to conduct regular aerial surveys of the construction site and monitor progress. The goal of these surveys is to provide high-resolution images and videos.

After Construction

  • Road Restoration: Temporary road surfaces will be maintained until final road restoration can be scheduled, based on weather.
