Project is on schedule for completion the week of Aug. 12, 2024.

Tualatin Valley Water District (TVWD) is replacing about 350 feet of the current 6-inch water main along SW Florence Street, west of SW Stoddard Drive, with a new 8-inch ductile iron water main.

Water mains are underground pipes that carry treated drinking water from a water treatment plant to a customer’s home or business.

The project will enhance the water system in this area by:

  • Replacing aging infrastructure.
  • Upgrading infrastructure with a history of leaks.
  • Improving water and fire flow capacity to the area.

This project is a $150,000 investment supported by water rates.

A map of the project area is below.

Timeline

  • Construction Began: Week of August 5, 2024
  • Two Planned Water Service Shut Offs: Week of August 12, 2024
  • Construction Completion: Week of August 12, 2024
  • Permanant Paving: Summer/Fall 2024

The project timeline is subject to change.

Process

Replacing the water main will include:

  • Cutting into the road surface.
  • Digging a trench.
  • Installing a section of the new water main in the trench.
  • Backfilling the section of trench and temporarily restoring the road surface.
  • Testing the new section of the water main for pressure and water quality.
  • Repeating steps two through five for additional water main sections.
  • Connecting customers’ water service lines to the new water main after all sections are installed.
  • Disconnecting the old water main from the system.
  • Performing final road restoration (paving).

Impacts

Before Construction Begins

  • Preparation Work: TVWD will be onsite to conduct preparatory work, including potholing (or digging small holes to locate existing utilities) and surveying in the roadway and public right-of-way.

During Construction

  • Workdays and Hours: Work will typically occur Monday through Friday from 7 am to 5 pm.
  • Large Equipment: Front loaders, excavators, and dump trucks will be used during this project.
  • Noise, Dust, and Vibrations: Properties near the project site will experience noise, dust, and vibration.
  • Traffic Impacts: Portions of the road where the construction is taking place may need to be closed temporarily to allow crews to work safely and efficiently. There might be temporary interruptions to driveway access or pedestrian pathways near the construction area.
  • Planned Water Service Interruptions: Water service may intermittently be shut off for several hours to complete portions of the project. Customers will be notified with a front door notice at least 24 hours in advance of any planned water service shut off.
  • Services: Mail, garbage, and delivers will continue to have access to provide services.
  • Drone Surveys: During the project, TVWD may fly a drone to capture high-resolution images and videos and monitor progress.

After Construction

  • Road Restoration: Temporary road surfaces will be maintained until final road restoration can be scheduled, based on weather.
