Cross Connection and Backflow Protection

What Is A Cross Connection?

Any actual or potential connection between the public or a customer’s drinking/potable water system and the piping or fixtures that carry other types of non-potable water or substances that are not safe to drink or may impact the taste or odor of water. Common cross connections in residential homes include, sprinkler and irrigation systems, pools or hot tubs, fire suppression systems, boilers, and auxiliary water systems (wells).

What Is Backflow?

Drinking water typically flows in one direction, from the public water system to your tap, in pressurized water pipes. Under certain circumstances it can flow in the opposite direction, or "backflow". When backflow occurs, water runs backwards through the water system and could contain substances which may contaminate the drinking water supply. TVWD strives to maintain positive pressure in the system at all times, but events such as main breaks and fire fighting can contribute to backflow conditions.
