Fire Hydrant Operation

Hydrant Operation by TVWD authorized users

Tualatin Valley Water District (TVWD) only allows permitted users to operate its green cap hydrants for bulk water access.  Unauthorized access will result in a fine.

Permitted users should take care not to open or close a fire hydrant too quickly, as this may cause water hammer, which could damage the water main and nearby customers’ plumbing.  TVWD’s fire hydrants are designed to be operated full-on or full-off only.  Operating a partially opened hydrant valve may result in water at a high system pressure flowing directly into the soil surrounding the hydrant.  A gate/chapman valve is required to regulate the flow of the water.

The hydrant valve should be slowly and fully closed after each use. Equipment should be removed after each use for safety purposes to avoid injury or property damage. The operator is liable for all damages resulting from improper use of the hydrant.

TVWD will confiscate unattended equipment attached to TVWD hydrants.  If you are missing equipment, contact TVWD to see if it is in our possession.
